BASIX is a web-based planning tool that measures the potential performance of new residential dwellings against sustainability indices. BASIX ensures each dwelling design meets the NSW Government's targets of 40% reduction in water consumption and 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, compared with the average home. The greenhouse target will increase to 40% from July 2006.
Each development application for a residential dwelling must be submitted with a BASIX Certificate. A Certificate is issued once a BASIX assessment has been satisfactorily completed. The building applicant, (eg. architect, builder, owner builder) is responsible for completing the assessment, ensuring the BASIX commitments are clearly marked on the plans, and submitting the BASIX Certificate with the development application. The sustainability indices are energy, water and thermal comfort.
